I'm on a spinning HDD old school, I know. Good suggestion, I'll try that. I do hear my HDD taking a beating on this - it's constantly seeking. I just synced using a ThinkPad x61 and it only took a couple days. You don't need to sync. You can just dump your private keys from core without syncing, and then sweep then in electrum. I didn't think it applied to me as I thought I still needed to sync the whole BC first before exporting the private keys. It's not too bad if you don't have too many addresses.
And that will give you a list of private keys. Then you open electrum, make an account, write down your seed words, etc. Huge thanks jwinterm, you just helped me with the missing piece - I was unclear about which keys to use - I thought I only needed one address; not the 4 for me that contain coins. However, one final piece: I see that the address is auto generated in red, I deleted it the first time by mistake when I open the Sweep dialog.
Got that figured out. However, my 4th key gave me a "No inputs found" error. However, because the BC hasn't confirmed that transaction, I'm guessing that key is now "locked" until the transaction is confirmed. So, I think I successfully shot myself in the foot and have now committed to having re-sync the entire BC in order to get the rest of my coins. I tried doing an "abandontransaction" from the BCCWallet console, but got the "Transaction not eligible for abandonment code -5 ".
